Brick masonry restoration and repairBrick are one of the most durable material that people build from, and brick itself is generally more durable than the mortar that it's laid with. Tuckpointing a brick wall when the mortar joints have been damage by time and weather is an excellent (and sometimes the only) way to restore them back to their original beauty. Tuckpointing brick is a process that involves replacing damaged mortar that surrounds the brick without relaying them. It involves excavating any loose mortar that is in the joints to a depth that is no less than the joint is wide (or even deeper). Sometimes mortar is so deteriorated that tuckpointing is no longer is an option and brick must be relayed. In the Vancouver area water is the main reason for damage of brick walls. Main thing that usually require tuckpointing is a chimney, this is due to the fact that a masonry crown isn't maintained well. As time goes by small cracks open and let water penetrate into the top of a fireplace or chimney, at first this is hard to see due to the fact that most chimney tops are 25 to 30 feet in the air. Your first sign that the chimney needs repair or tuckpointed is if you see moss growing on the surface or the brick. The earlier you fix this issue the less expensive it will be.
